2026 federal rates (Rev. Proc. 2025-32). State income tax is estimated with the state's official 2026 employer withholding formula, so it approximates what is taken from each paycheck; the tax owed on your return can differ, and city or county taxes are not included. 401(k) contributions lower income tax but not Social Security or Medicare; health, FSA and HSA contributions lower both. To set your Form W-4, use the W-4 withholding calculator.
This breakdown reflects estimated withholding. When you file, TurboTax auto-imports your W-2 and finds every deduction.

Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus all taxes and deductions. For most employees, that means subtracting federal income tax (based on your filing status and bracket), Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%), and your state income tax. Pre-tax deductions come off before income tax is calculated; health premiums, FSA and HSA contributions also reduce Social Security and Medicare, while 401(k) contributions do not.
The 2026 federal standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married filing jointly and $24,150 for head of household. This amount is subtracted from your adjusted gross income before applying the bracket rates, which is why your effective tax rate is always lower than your marginal (top) bracket rate.
State income tax varies significantly — from 0% in Texas, Florida, and seven other states, to over 8% in California and Oregon. On a $100,000 salary, that difference can be $6,000–$8,000 in annual take-home. Use the state comparison tool above to see exactly how much a state change would affect your wallet.
