Key findings
- On a $75,000 salary, a single filer takes home the most ($61,593 a year, $5,133 a month) in the 9 states with no income tax, and the least in Maryland ($56,155 a year).
- That is a gap of $5,438 a year ($453 a month) for the same gross pay.
- The 9 no-income-tax states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. Residents there pay only federal tax and FICA.
- Federal tax and FICA are identical in every state on the same salary, so the whole gap in this table comes from state income tax.

Methodology
Single filer, standard deduction, paid bi-weekly, no pre-tax deductions, no dependents and no credits. Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction. FICA is 6.2% Social Security up to the 2026 wage base plus 1.45% Medicare. State tax is estimated from each state's 2026 employer withholding method. Local income taxes (some cities and counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and others) are not included. Figures are estimates, not tax advice. The same engine powers the salary calculator, so you can run your own numbers.
